I don’t buy it from those “anarchic”, buckers of mainstream society when they rant on about all TV being evil. Granted, plenty of it does completely suck. But how can you say it all sucks when Flavor of Love has done so much to entertain and enrich the world?!

Anyway, since returning to England and battling unemployment, I have watched quite a number of seasons of a tidy amount of television shows. Most of what I have seen has been pretty excellent in one way or another.

A clear exception to this has been Flash Forward, or, as I like to call it “a crushing disappointment dressed up as something fascinating” (I’m quite the fan of brevity, aren’t I?). All I will say is that they could have saved a lot of money and hired several blocks of wood to do the acting, instead of Joseph Fiennes and that hobbit guy, who is only really good at being a hobbit. There, I said it. Also, they appear to have achieved something quite uncanny in that they came up with a story that should have been almost infinitely interesting and entertaining, and made it something that I could not care much less about. Really, they could announce that they are about to have the most enthralling storylines the world has ever seen on the show, and I would find watching paint dry on a wall more interesting.

I can’t quite believe that I’ve written so much about that show, sorry about that! I shall now proceed to rant on about the TV I have watched and actually enjoyed! Hurrah and huzzah! I will be splitting these “reviews” (if you can even call them that) into parts numbering more than one, because I’ve watched enough to make that quite necessary! I’m afraid I can offer no clear answer regarding how many parts there will be, but I know you are an easy going bunch so I’m sure this won’t be too much of an issue for you! Look at is as something spontaneous and exhilarating, why don’t you?

Weeds (5 seasons released so far, and I have watched all of them.)

So, this one bird’s husband dies all of a sudden, and she’s left with her two kids and a fancy, schmancy suburban American lifestyle to maintain. What a pickle! It’s especially important for her to make sure her kids’ lives remain as undisrupted as possible. This is understandable and a perfectly natural thing for a parent to want to do. Now, a seemingly golden business opportunity presents itself in the form of being a drug dealer and selling weed to all her posh friends. She doesn’t foresee the scrapes that this venture will send her towards, but, boy, does she run into them! The show does have a lot of illicitness and naughty swear words, so I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, just thought I should mention that! Honestly, the nature of the change and disruption that occurs does get a bit ridiculous, making me think of the time The Fonz did that water-ski stunt. Weeds went from being a fun and engrossing jaunt to bleaker than the bleakest midwinter pretty darn quickly, which was tiresome and annoying. I stopped watching Lost when Kate and Sawyer “did it” in the bear cage in season three, and I haven’t started watching it again since then. I know that it has been proven that Lost is the best TV show ever invented, but that moment of tenderness was just too much for me and I had to give it up! I hate to be such a quitter, and one day I’ll probably watch Lost all the way through, and subsequently live a changed life. I could not give up on Weeds, no matter how farcical it started to become. I’m not very good at leaving things unresolved, and I knew that if I didn’t watch Weeds all the way through until the end of the latest season, it would eat away at me and the world would not seem right. One way that they could have gone would be to make things a bit less chaotic for drug dealer Mum and her family; to cut back on some of the ridiculousness. Evidently the creators of the show thought that this approach would be just too boring, and I’d agree with that. They had worked themselves into a crazy corner, and the only way out would be to take the crazy and run with it. So they went the other way, and cranked the craziness up to a level that I could not deny was impressive. I am now actually looking forward to all the crazy of season 6, which should be unleashed this year.

Okay, that’s it for part one. Next time around I shall be taking a look at Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm. It should be pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.
